-
Is there an age limit on who can hire a boat?
- Hirers who do not hold a boating license must be at least 18 years or older and carry some form of photo identification, such as a driver's license or passport. Individuals who hold a boating license and who are under 18 are able to hire a boat.
Does the hire rate include everything I need?
- Rent A Tinny boats come fully equipped with a full tank of fuel and all safety equipment. Rods and tackle are available for hire at $10 per rod. Bait can be purchased for between $4-$5 per bag.
I've never operated a boat before - does that matter?
- Rent A Tinny's instructors will give you a free driving lesson before you embark on your trip. The lesson includes how to start the engine and drive the boat as well as basic navigation rules. The boats are very easy to drive.
Why don't I need a boat operator's license?
- The boats operate under strict conditions. For example, you can only hire a boat during daylight hours, and can only go in restricted areas within Corio Bay. The boats operate at a maximum speed of 10 knots or less. They are annually inspected by Marine Safety Victoria and issued with a Certificate of Survey. We are only the water at all times with a rescue boat if required.
I want to hire a boat on location at the Waterfront - where am I allowed to go?
- Licensed drivers are permitted within the waters of Corio Bay and the Outer Harbour West of the line between Clifton Springs Jetty and Point Wilson Pier (see map). Unlicensed drivers are restricted to Corio Bay, south of the Hopetoun Channel from the Bulk Grain Pier to Point Henry (see map).
Do I need to wear a life jacket while I'm on the boat?
- Although recent laws have come into effect sipulating that life jackets must be worn on recreational boats, Rent A Tinny boats are exempted because they are commercial boats. Life jackets are not compulsory for adults over the age of 12. All children under the age of 12 must wear a life jacket at all times. Boats are equipped with life jackets and it's recommended that these are worn if passengers can't swim. Life jackets optional if over 12 years old.

Are the boats inspected?
- Yes - inspections by both parties before departure and after and upon return
Do I need to pay a bond, and how much is it?
- A bond is not required for boats that are pre-launched from the Geelong Waterfront. Tow away and commercial hirers must pay a bond of $500. Payment of the bond should be made prior to the boat being taken away and can be via Credit card, cash, or cheque. The bond is paid incase the boat incurs damage or loss of safety equipment.
Are the boats insured?
- Yes. However, if damage is incurred, the hirer is required to pay a maximum $1000 excess for pre-launched boats, and a $2000 excess for tow away and commercial rentals.
I am planning a family holiday to New South Wales. Can I take a boat interstate?
- Interstate tow away rentals can be organised with the approval of the marine safety authorities in each state.
I'm planning an overnight fishing trip. Is that ok?
- No. All boats must be used during daylight hours only, unless an exemption is obtained from Marine Safety Victoria.
I only want to fish for a couple of hours off the pier. Do I need to obtain a fishing license?
- Pensioners and persons under the age of 18 are exempt from requiring a fishing license. Everyone else must carry a current fishing license if they intend to fish. Rent A Tinny is a registered fishing license agent, and can offer licenses that cover 48 hours, one week, one year, or three years.
